So many ones ...

I love auspicious dates. And 1/1/11 has that going for it, for sure.

It feels more important than just the beginning of another new year, like I should be doing something auspicious and meaningful and life-changing. Instead I'm ... sitting around in my pajamas, watching a Buffy marathon on Logo and wondering if there are any more Hershey's Kisses hiding somewhere, post-Christmas and stocking raiding. Hmmm.

To make up for it, I decided to pick up this poor neglected blog and dust it off, and to start with a post about something I've been meaning to do for a while. Which a friend had to kickstart me into doing, but we don't need to dwell on that, right?

This is her blog, and I love her idea -- read books you already own! Who among us doesn't have a to-be-read pile, right? Mine is ... pretty big. I can actually show some restraint when it comes to buying shoes or clothes or shiny things, but books? Not so much.

So here's my list, beginning with books I've started but haven't finished. I'm going to limit it to twelve, since library books aren't off-limits, and because I do have a book to write, too. (Hi, Awesome Editor, if you're reading this!) That's a book for each month, and also just about as much math as I ever like to do.

1) The Strain, Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan
2) The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Stieg Larson
3) The Blue Girl, Charles de Lint

(There are other books I've started but put down, but these are the ones I want to finish first.)

4)  Going Bovine, Libba Bray (I loved Libba's Realms trilogy so very very much. Read it, if you haven't.)
5)  Beautiful Creatures, Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
6)  Jellicoe Road, Melina Marchetta
7)  Christine Falls, Benjamin Black
8)  Shiver, Maggie Stiefvater
9)  Girls Like Us, Sheila Weller (This is a biography, of sorts, of Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon, and it looks fantastic.)
10) If I Stay, Gayle Forman
11) March, Geraldine Brooks (If it has something to do with Little Women, I'll read it.)
12) Fragile Eternity, Melissa Marr

And then there will be the roughly two zillion books coming out this year that I want to read. Um, whoo hoo? I'm going to try a "no buying a new book until one of the old ones gets read" rule, and whisper nice things to my library card, I guess.

Now to decide if I should read them in order ...

  1. I must admit that one of the impulses for my challenge was no more room on the shelves--So I particularly like your "No buying" rule.
